Emergency Pediatric Dentist FAQ's

Parents often wonder if they should take their child to the ER or an emergency pediatric dentist if there’s an urgent situation involving their teeth. It can depend on what your child is experiencing. If your child has a head injury, heavy bleeding, or is having trouble breathing, immediately take them to the ER to prioritize their safety. Tooth-related problems like chipped teeth, infections, severe tooth pain, or swollen teeth can be treated more effectively with pediatric dentistry.

If your child has a toothache, gently brush and floss around the sore area, removing any food that may be trapped near it. Rinse their mouth with warm saltwater to ease their discomfort, and apply a cold compress on their cheek if the tooth is swollen. Make an appointment with your pediatric dentist if the tooth pain, swelling, or sensitivity continues.

When your child’s tooth gets knocked out, gently pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, and rinse it off, handling it carefully. Place it in milk to protect the root cells, and bring it with you to the pediatric dentist. Sometimes a permanent tooth can be reimplanted, and the dentist will be able to determine this.

If your child chips or fractures their tooth, keep the area clean and apply a cold compress to ease discomfort. Save any broken pieces if possible, and tell them not to bite down on it. Contact their pediatric dentist so they can evaluate it and determine the proper treatment.
